Biography

Gareth has always had a keen interest in music – as a child, he was involved in a number of choirs, music groups, bands and musical theatre societies. After graduating from the University of Manchester with MusB(Hons) in Music, Gareth moved back to his home town Newcastle upon Tyne. He now works as Visiting Music Teacher with Newcastle Music Service and South Tyneside Music Service, where he teaches children from nursery age up to sixth form, in singing, piano/keyboard, violin, piano and a few other instruments too!

In July 2003, Gareth performed his first piano recital at Robert Stewart Memorial Church in Fenham. This was the beginning of five subsquent recitals over the next three years, each with carefully chosen themes and a wide variety of music. Other concerts and recitals have taken place at St. Nicholas’ Cathedral in Newcastle, and residental homes around the city.

Gareth is frequently in demand as an accompanist. He frequently plays with Bede Wind & Chorus, part of which has recently involved accompanying the opera singers Graeme Danby and Bibi Heal at the Sage Gateshead.

As Musical Director of Walkerville Musical Society, Gareth is responsible for rehearsing the cast and co-ordinating the musical productions. Recent shows include The Merry Widow (2008), Anything Goes (2010) and 42nd Street in (2011).  The society have a busy schedule throughout the year, including Christmas Concerts and pantomimes, this year being Cinderella. From a young child, Gareth has taken part in Newcastle Gang Show where he is now Deputy Musical Director, and also Musical Director of Blyth Valley Gang Show and Derwentside Gang Show.

Throughout the year, Gareth plays for a number of weddings, civil ceremonies and functions all around the North East, where venues have included the Vermont Hotel, the Copthorne Hotel, Beamish Hall Hotel and Otterburn Tower.
